Leek (American Flag) — also known as American Flag Leek, Broad London Leek or लीक / गंडाना — is an exotic bulb and stem vegetable from the Amaryllidaceae family, native to Mediterranean/Near East. This Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum variety grows 40–60 cm tall with an upright habit and is ready to harvest in 100–130 days. Harvest profile: white stalk, dark green leaves; long cylindrical stalk; 20–30 cm usable white stalk. Key highlights: classic heirloom American Flag leek seeds, mild flavour, excellent cold tolerance.

This pack of open pollinated seeds (heirloom) delivers 70–80% germination, with seedlings appearing in 10–14 days. Suitable for gardeners with some experience, Leek (American Flag) grows well on Indian terraces, balconies, raised beds and kitchen gardens. It needs full sun to partial shade, deep, loamy, well-drained, rich in organic matter soil (pH 6.0–7.0) and moderate watering. For container growing, use Geo Fabric Circular Grow Bags or HDPE Rectangular Grow Bags — recommended size: deep 12 inch grow bag recommended.

Sow Leek (American Flag) in India during October–December (Rabi season), when temperatures sit around 13–24°C. Plants keep producing for 4–8 weeks (can stand in ground longer), with an expected yield of 1 stalk (150–250 g) per plant. It is perfect for soups (leek & potato), stews, sautés, garnish and quiches. Grow it alongside carrot, celery and onion family, plus flowers such as marigold — carrot and leek planted together can help confuse each other's pests (carrot fly/onion fly). Looking for a similar crop? See our Red Cabbage (लाल गोभी) Seeds.

Good source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A, folate and manganese. Exotic vegetables like leek are expensive and hard to find fresh in local markets, but they are surprisingly easy to grow at home from seed. Best suited to cool winter climates and hill regions of India. Well-suited states include Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and hill regions of Maharashtra/Karnataka.
