Red Cabbage — also known as Purple Cabbage or लाल गोभी / लाल पत्ता गोभी — is an exotic head vegetable from the Brassicaceae family, native to Mediterranean/Europe. This Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra variety grows 30–40 cm tall with a compact rosette forming dense round head habit and is ready to harvest in 85–105 days. Harvest profile: deep purple-red; dense, round to slightly flattened head; 12–18 cm diameter. Key highlights: vibrant red/purple cabbage seeds, high germination, great for salads and slaws.

This pack of open pollinated seeds (heirloom) delivers 80–90% germination, with seedlings appearing in 7–10 days. Suitable for gardeners with some experience, Red Cabbage grows well on Indian terraces, balconies, raised beds and kitchen gardens. It needs full sun (6+ hrs), loamy, fertile, well-drained, rich in organic matter soil (pH 6.0–7.0) and moderate-high watering. For container growing, use Geo Fabric Circular Grow Bags or HDPE Rectangular Grow Bags — recommended size: 15x15 inch grow bag recommended.

Sow Red Cabbage in India during September–November (Rabi season), when temperatures sit around 15–22°C. Plants keep producing for one-time harvest per plant, with an expected yield of 1 head (800 g-1.5 kg) per plant. It is perfect for coleslaw, salads, pickling, braising and stir-fries. Grow it alongside onion, potato, beet and celery, plus flowers such as marigold, nasturtium and calendula — onion and marigold help repel aphids and cabbage worms. Looking for a similar crop? Rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, anthocyanins (antioxidants). Exotic vegetables like red cabbage are expensive and hard to find fresh in local markets, but they are surprisingly easy to grow at home from seed. Best in cool winter months across North & Central India, hill stations year-round. Well-suited states include Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.

How long do Red Cabbage seeds take to germinate?

Red Cabbage seeds germinate in 7–10 days under ideal conditions, with a germination rate of 80–90%. Sow in seedling tray, 0.5 cm deep; keep moist; transplant when 4–5 true leaves appear.

When should I sow Red Cabbage seeds in India?

The best sowing months for Red Cabbage in India are September–November (Rabi season). Sowing in this window gives the 15–22°C temperatures the plant prefers.

How many days does Red Cabbage take to harvest?

Red Cabbage is ready to harvest in 85–105 days from sowing, and keeps producing for one-time harvest per plant with regular picking.

How tall does a Red Cabbage plant grow?

Red Cabbage grows to 30–40 cm with a compact rosette forming dense round head growth habit and a spread of 40–50 cm.

How much sunlight does Red Cabbage need?

Red Cabbage needs full sun (6+ hrs) for healthy growth and good yields. Shade tolerance is low.

Can Red Cabbage be grown in a grow bag on a terrace?

Yes — 15x15 inch grow bag recommended. Container friendly: yes (large container/grow bag). Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with compost.

What does Red Cabbage taste like?

Red Cabbage has a slightly peppery and sweeter when cooked taste with crisp, dense leaves texture. It is ideal for coleslaw, salads, pickling, braising and stir-fries.

What soil pH does Red Cabbage prefer?

Red Cabbage prefers loamy, fertile, well-drained, rich in organic matter soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Mix in well-rotted compost before sowing for best results.

What are good companion plants for Red Cabbage?

Good companions are Onion, Potato, Beet and Celery, and flowers such as Marigold, Nasturtium and Calendula. Onion and marigold help repel aphids and cabbage worms.

Can I save seeds from my Red Cabbage plants?

Yes. Red Cabbage is open pollinated, so seeds saved from healthy, fully mature plants will grow true to type if kept away from other varieties that could cross-pollinate.

Should I sow Red Cabbage seeds directly or transplant seedlings?

Recommended method: Transplant. Start seeds in a nursery tray and transplant at 5–6 weeks old seedlings.

Why are my Red Cabbage seeds not germinating?

The most common causes are sowing outside September–November, soil that is too cold or dry, and sowing too deep. Sow in seedling tray, 0.5 cm deep; keep moist; transplant when 4–5 true leaves appear.

Why are my Red Cabbage seedlings tall and leggy?

Leggy seedlings are stretching for light. Move trays to full sun as soon as seedlings emerge and avoid overcrowding.

How do I control pests on Red Cabbage?

Red Cabbage can be affected by aphids, cabbage worms, clubroot, cracking from irregular watering. Inspect leaves regularly, especially the undersides, remove affected parts and apply a neem-based spray in the early morning or evening.

Why are my Red Cabbage leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves usually point to overwatering, poor drainage or a nutrient shortage. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, and feed with compost or organic fertiliser every few weeks.

Can Red Cabbage grow in partial shade?

Red Cabbage performs best in full sun (6+ hrs). With shade tolerance rated low, plants in shade grow slower and yield less.

How often should I water Red Cabbage?

Water requirement is moderate-high, consistent. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry — usually every 1–2 days in summer and less often in cool or cloudy weather.

Can Red Cabbage tolerate Indian summer heat?

Heat tolerance is low. In very hot months, give afternoon shade, mulch the soil and water early in the morning to reduce stress.

What diseases affect Red Cabbage and how can I prevent them?

Disease resistance is moderate; watch for clubroot in poorly drained soil. Space plants for good airflow, water at the base instead of over the leaves, and remove infected leaves promptly.

Why is my Red Cabbage flowering too early?

Early flowering (bolting) is triggered by heat, long days and water stress. Sow only in the September–November window, keep soil evenly moist and harvest promptly once red cabbage reaches usable size.
