Gulmohar (Flame Tree) — also known as Royal Poinciana — is an ornamental flowering / avenue tree from the Fabaceae family, native to Madagascar. Raised from these Delonix regia seeds, it grows into a deciduous to semi-evergreen tree reaching about 10–15 m with a broad, umbrella-shaped / spreading canopy and a spread of about 10–20 m. These are natural, untreated ornamental flowering tree seeds suitable for landscape, avenue, garden and boundary planting. Its blooms in shades of scarlet red and orange-red flowers make it a standout garden tree wherever it is planted.

Each pack contains 50 g of seeds with a germination rate of about 60–80% under suitable conditions, and seedlings typically emerge in about 1–3 weeks (7–21 days). Rated easy to moderate to raise from seed, Gulmohar (Flame Tree) responds best when you lightly scarify the hard seed coat and soak before sowing to support water absorption. Start seeds in nursery trays or Geo Fabric Circular Grow Bags filled with a light, well-draining mix, then shift healthy seedlings to a spot with full sun and well-drained loamy, sandy-loam or sandy soil (pH 5.5–7.5). A Small Stainless Steel Trowel makes lifting and transplanting young seedlings easy without disturbing the roots.

The ideal sowing window in India is February–September, during the spring to monsoon window, when warm 20–35°C temperatures support quick, even germination. Gulmohar (Flame Tree) suits urban planting, avenue and roadside planting, landscaping, agroforestry and farm and boundary planting across tropical & subtropical zones. Traditional uses have been reported; seeds sold for planting purposes. Timber value is rated low to moderate. Planning a mixed green belt? Pair it with our Cassia Fistula (Golden Shower Tree Seeds) for a varied, resilient planting.

Beyond its practical value, Gulmohar (Flame Tree) provides shade, tree cover, floral resources and habitat, has carbon sequestration potential rated moderate, and provides flowers, shade and habitat. Growing from seed is the most economical way to establish a row of young plants, and it lets the young tree adapt to your local soil and climate from day one — ideal for home gardeners, farm owners, schools, CSR plantation drives and landscape projects.

How to Grow Gulmohar (Flame Tree) from Seed

Gulmohar (Flame Tree) Sowing Season in India

Sow in the spring to monsoon window, ideally February–September, at 20–35°C. Avoid cold winter sowing, when germination slows sharply. Suits tropical & subtropical climates up to 1,000 m.

Seed Preparation

Lightly scarify the hard seed coat and soak before sowing to support water absorption. Discard shrivelled or hollow seeds. Regional guidance: ICFRE.

Sowing Gulmohar (Flame Tree) Seeds

  • Method: Nursery / Seed Tray / Polybag Sowing; direct sowing: possible; nursery sowing preferred
  • Mix: garden soil, cocopeat and compost, well-drained
  • Depth: cover with a thin layer, about twice the seed's thickness
  • Germination: about 1–3 weeks (7–21 days)
  • Keep warm and evenly moist; mist with a 1 L Spray Pump

Transplanting and Spacing

Transplant established seedlings carefully into a sunny, well-drained location with sufficient space for canopy development. Spacing: about 6–10 m (mature spread about 10–20 m). Containers: suitable when young; not ideal permanently.

Ongoing Care

Give full sun and moderate water using a Watering Can. Tolerance: drought moderate to high once established, frost low and waterlogging low; shield seedlings from frost and standing water in year one. Growth rate is fast; feed with compost or bio-fertilisers each monsoon.

Where to Plant Gulmohar (Flame Tree)

Best for urban planting, avenue and roadside planting, landscaping, agroforestry and farm and boundary planting. Zones: tropical & subtropical zones. States: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other warm regions.

Common Problems

Slow germination without pretreatment, overwatering, waterlogging, insufficient sunlight and cold stress. Good drainage and avoiding overwatering prevent most seedling losses.
