Not all vegetables are equally suited to container growing. Some crops — particularly deep-rooted or sprawling ones — genuinely struggle in grow bags. But these 7 vegetables not only survive in grow bags for plants, they actually outperform their ground-grown counterparts when the right bag size, mix, and nutrition are used.

Recommended Bag: 15–18 inch circular geo fabric
Tip: Support with a bamboo stake or trellis attached to the bag handle. Apply neem cake monthly to suppress Fusarium and root nematodes. See also: Neem Cake for Tomatoes
Recommended Bag: 12–15 inch circular geo fabric
Tip: Chillies are the most space-efficient crop for Indian balconies. One 12-inch bag can support a productive chilli plant for a full season. See also: Neem Cake for Chillies
Recommended Bag: 12 inch rectangular or circular
Tip: Leafy greens have shallow roots and are ideal for multi-layer terrace setups. Succession-sow every 3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
Recommended Bag: 18 inch circular, minimum 18L volume
Tip: Okra roots go deep — use a taller bag over a shallow one. Excellent summer crop; grows prolifically in geo fabric bags in Indian heat.
Recommended Bag: 20–24 inch HDPE rectangular
Tip: Train the vine on a vertical trellis. One plant in a 24-inch HDPE bag with good nutrition can produce 20–40 fruits per season.
Recommended Bag: 12 inch rectangular geo fabric (multiple plants per bag)
Tip: Use the 60-30-10 potting mix with extra vermicompost. Harvest outer leaves only to keep the plant producing for 3–4 months.
Recommended Bag: 15 inch rectangular geo fabric
Tip: Bush varieties do well in a single bag. Pole varieties need vertical support but are highly productive — ideal for terrace edge placement.
For all seven crops, the base fertilizer recommendation is: neem cake fertilizer at planting + vermicompost top-dressing monthly + seaweed extract foliar spray at fruiting/flowering. This combination covers nitrogen, micronutrients, and pest suppression without any synthetic inputs.

Can I grow potatoes in grow bags?
Yes. Potatoes grow exceptionally well in grow bags because you can add soil in stages as the plant grows (hilling). Use a 20-litre or larger bag and a loose, well-draining mix.
How many tomato plants per grow bag?
One plant per 15-inch bag, or two plants per 18-inch bag if you're growing compact or determinate varieties. Overcrowding reduces yield and increases disease pressure.
Can I grow two different vegetables in one grow bag?
Yes — this is called companion planting. Effective pairings: tomato + basil, chilli + coriander, okra + beans. Avoid pairing plants with very different water needs.
