Both come from the neem seed. Both contain azadirachtin. But neem cake and neem oil do fundamentally different jobs — and using the wrong one (or using one when you need both) is one of the most common mistakes in organic terrace gardening.
This sub-blog is part of our complete guide: Neem Cake Fertilizer: Uses, Benefits & Dosage Guide.
Neem oil is extracted by pressing or solvent-extracting neem seeds. It's a liquid concentrate, rich in triglycerides and azadirachtin, and is primarily applied as a foliar spray.
Neem cake is what remains after the oil is extracted. It's a dry granule or powder that retains nitrogen, secondary metabolites, and some residual azadirachtin. It's applied to the soil, not the leaves.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) classifies both as biopesticide inputs, but in different application categories — foliar (neem oil) vs. soil amendment (neem cake).

Use neem cake when your problem is in the soil: visible root knots, stunted plants without above-ground pest signs, Fusarium wilt symptoms, or when you want to proactively protect roots in grow bags where soil cannot be easily replaced.
Buy neem cake fertilizer from Anandi Greens for soil application.
Use neem oil when you see above-ground pests: aphids, mealybugs, whitefly, spider mites, or early-stage fungal leaf spots (powdery mildew, downy mildew). Apply as a diluted spray (2–3ml neem oil + 1ml liquid soap per litre of water) in the early morning or evening.
The most resilient organic terrace garden uses neem cake in the soil at planting and monthly thereafter, and neem oil as a fortnightly preventive foliar spray (or immediately when pests are spotted). This two-layer approach covers both soil-borne and air-borne threats — particularly important in Indian monsoon conditions when pest and fungal pressure peaks.

Can I mix neem cake and neem oil together?
Not directly. Neem cake is a solid soil amendment; neem oil is a liquid spray. They are used through separate application routes. You can use both on the same plant — neem cake in the soil, neem oil on the leaves.
Which is more effective against pests?
They target different pests. Neem oil is faster and more effective against above-ground insects. Neem cake is more effective against soil-borne pests like nematodes and root-rot fungi.
Is neem cake or neem oil better for grow bags?
Use both. Start with neem cake mixed into your potting medium at planting. Use neem oil as a fortnightly foliar spray throughout the growing season.
