☀️ Best Season & Growing Conditions
Cowpea grows best in warm weather and does not tolerate frost. In many North and Central Indian plains, sow during February–April after cold weather has passed, or June–July with good monsoon drainage. These are indicative windows; follow local weather rather than the calendar alone.
In frost-free southern and coastal locations, the planting window may be longer. Avoid cold, saturated soil and prolonged waterlogging. Choose a position receiving around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight.
🪴 Suitable Grow Bag Sizes

-
18 × 18 inch: Roomier option for 1–2 plants, depending on growth habit and canopy space..
🌿 How to Grow Cowpea from Seeds
-
Prepare the container: Fill with loose, well-draining soil enriched with mature compost. Avoid compacted or soggy medium.
-
Sow directly: Sow into the final bag or bed, approximately 2–3 cm deep. Follow any specific instructions on the seed pack.
-
Water gently: Keep the sowing zone evenly moist, not waterlogged.
-
Thin seedlings: Retain healthy plants according to the container size. Cut unwanted seedlings at soil level to avoid disturbing nearby roots.
-
Support when needed: Install suitable support early if the variety starts climbing.
-
Maintain the plants: Water at soil level, check for pests and follow labelled feeding instructions. Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding.
-
Harvest tender pods: Pick while young and before seeds noticeably bulge. Harvest timing varies by cultivar, weather and care.
