Blue Jacaranda — also known as Blue Trumpet Tree — is an ornamental flowering tree from the Bignoniaceae family, native to South America. Raised from these Jacaranda mimosifolia seeds, it grows into a deciduous to semi-deciduous tree reaching about 10–20 m with a broad, open, rounded / spreading canopy and a spread of about 8–15 m. These are natural, untreated ornamental flowering tree seeds suitable for landscape, avenue and garden tree planting. Its blooms in shades of violet-blue and lavender-blue flowers make it a standout avenue tree wherever it is planted.

Each pack contains 10 g of seeds with a germination rate of about 60–80% under suitable conditions, and seedlings typically emerge in about 2–4 weeks (14–30 days). Rated easy to moderate to raise from seed, Blue Jacaranda responds best when you soak seeds in water before sowing; use fresh seeds and maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Start seeds in nursery trays or Geo Fabric Circular Grow Bags filled with a light, well-draining mix, then shift healthy seedlings to a spot with full sun and fertile, well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soil (pH 5.5–7.5). A Small Stainless Steel Trowel makes lifting and transplanting young seedlings easy without disturbing the roots.

The ideal sowing window in India is February–September, during the spring to monsoon window, when warm 20–30°C for germination/growing establishment temperatures support quick, even germination. Blue Jacaranda suits urban planting, avenue and roadside planting, landscaping, agroforestry and farm and boundary planting across tropical, subtropical & warm temperate zones. Traditional uses have been reported; seeds sold for planting only. Timber value is rated low to moderate. Planning a mixed landscape? Pair it with our Tabebuia Rosea (Marathi Gulabi | Pink Trumpet Tree Seeds) for complementary colour and canopy.

Beyond its visual appeal, Blue Jacaranda tree cover, shade, floral resources and urban greenery, has carbon sequestration potential rated moderate, and provides floral resources and tree habitat. Growing from seed is the most economical way to establish several saplings at once, and it lets the young tree adapt to your local soil and climate from day one — ideal for home gardeners, farm owners, schools, CSR plantation drives and landscape projects.

How to Grow Blue Jacaranda from Seed

Blue Jacaranda Sowing Season in India

Sow in the spring to monsoon window, ideally February–September, at 20–30°C for germination/growing establishment. Avoid cold winter sowing, when germination slows sharply. Suits tropical, subtropical & warm temperate climates up to 1,500 m.

Seed Preparation

Soak seeds in water before sowing; use fresh seeds and maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Discard shrivelled or hollow seeds. Regional guidance: ICFRE.

Sowing Blue Jacaranda Seeds

  • Method: Nursery / Seed Tray / Polybag Sowing; direct sowing: possible; nursery sowing preferred
  • Mix: garden soil, cocopeat and compost, well-drained
  • Depth: cover with a thin layer, about twice the seed's thickness
  • Germination: about 2–4 weeks (14–30 days)
  • Keep warm and evenly moist; mist with a 1 L Spray Pump

Transplanting and Spacing

Transplant established seedlings carefully to a sunny, well-drained location once sufficiently developed. Spacing: about 5–8 m (mature spread about 8–15 m). Containers: suitable when young; not ideal as a permanent container tree.

Ongoing Care

Give full sun and moderate water using a Watering Can. Tolerance: drought moderate once established, frost low to moderate; young plants are more sensitive and waterlogging low; shield seedlings from frost and standing water in year one. Growth rate is moderate to fast; feed with compost or bio-fertilisers each monsoon.

Where to Plant Blue Jacaranda

Best for urban planting, avenue and roadside planting, landscaping, agroforestry and farm and boundary planting. Zones: tropical, subtropical & warm temperate zones. States: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and other warm regions.

Common Problems

Poor germination from old seeds, overwatering, waterlogging, insufficient sunlight and cold stress. Good drainage and avoiding overwatering prevent most seedling losses.
