If you've only ever thought of grow bags as containers for growing plants, Vermibeds will surprise you — they're built for the opposite purpose: turning kitchen and garden waste into rich compost using worms.
A Vermibed is a specially constructed bag — usually HDPE — designed to house composting worms as they break down organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. Unlike a growing grow bag, it's built with specific drainage and structure to manage moisture and worm activity. See the Vermibeds online collection for available sizes.
If you're already growing vegetables or flowers in grow bags, a Vermibed closes the loop — kitchen scraps and plant trimmings go into the Vermibed, and the finished compost goes straight back into your other grow bags, cutting down on store-bought fertiliser.
Start with a smaller Vermibed if this is your first attempt at home vermicomposting — it's easier to manage moisture and worm population in a contained size before scaling up. Pair the finished compost with your existing grow bags collection plants for a genuinely closed-loop home garden.
How long does it take a Vermibed to produce usable compost?
Typically 2-3 months for the first batch, depending on worm population, waste input, and local climate conditions.
Do I need to buy worms separately for a Vermibed?
Yes, Vermibeds are sold as the container itself — composting worms (typically red wigglers) are sourced separately to populate the bed.
Can a Vermibed smell bad?
A well-maintained Vermibed with the right moisture balance and waste type shouldn't smell unpleasant — odour usually signals overfeeding or excess moisture that needs correcting.
