One of the most common questions we get at Anandi Greens: "How much neem cake should I use, and when?" The answer depends on your season, plant type, and whether you're using grow bags or open beds. This guide gives you a practical, season-wise dosage chart — no guesswork required.

Soil microbial activity — which drives neem cake decomposition — is directly temperature-dependent. In summer (35–42°C), neem cake breaks down faster, releasing nutrients more quickly. In winter (15–22°C), decomposition slows, meaning nutrients are released over a longer period. Adjusting your application frequency accounts for this variation.

Season |
Months |
Dose per Plant |
Frequency / Notes |
|
Summer |
Mar–May |
25–30g |
Every 3 weeks. Soil heats fast, decomp is rapid. |
|
Monsoon |
Jun–Sep |
40–50g |
Every 4 weeks. Wet soil slows active ingredient release. |
|
Post-Monsoon |
Oct–Nov |
50–60g |
Every 4–5 weeks. Peak growing season — maximise dose. |
|
Winter |
Dec–Feb |
60–75g |
Every 5–6 weeks. Cool soil = slower release, use more. |
For raised beds (per sq metre): multiply grow-bag dose by 4. For seedling trays: use half the summer dose mixed into the potting medium only.
Method 1 — Pre-mix at Planting: Mix the full seasonal dose into your potting mix before filling grow bags. This is the most effective method for new plantings.
Method 2 — Side-Dress Top Application: Sprinkle neem cake in a ring 3–4 cm from the plant base. Work lightly into the top layer of soil with a hand fork. Water immediately.
Method 3 — Neem Cake Tea: For rapid results, especially in summer when you want fast-acting nutrition, use neem cake tea as a soil drench every 2 weeks.
Nitrogen-hungry crops (tomatoes, leafy greens): use the higher end of each seasonal dose range.
Light feeders (herbs, onions, garlic): use the lower end of each range, or skip one application cycle in winter.
Fruiting vegetables (gourds, capsicum): reduce neem cake dose at flowering by 30% and supplement with phosphorus input (banana peel or bone meal).

Can I over-apply neem cake?
Yes. Applying more than 100g per 10L grow bag can temporarily drop soil pH and create ammonia toxicity. Always stick to the dosage guidelines and water in well after application.
Should I reduce the dose if I'm also using vermicompost?
Yes. When using neem cake and vermicompost together, reduce the neem cake dose by 20–25% since vermicompost also contributes nitrogen.
Is a monthly application schedule enough year-round?
For most Indian conditions, yes. In peak summer (April–May), consider moving to a 3-week cycle if your terrace is west-facing and receives intense heat.
