Which seeds go in which bag?

• Spinach — 18 × 9 inches; About 1–1.5 cm; Sow directly in the bag. Thin seedlings to roughly 10–15 cm apart for leaf growth.
• Methi / Fenugreek — 18 × 9 inches; About 1–2 cm; Sow directly in spaced rows. Avoid a thick, overcrowded layer of seeds.
• F1 Chilli — 12 × 12 inches; About 0.5–0.6 cm; Start in a seed tray or small nursery pot, then transplant one established seedling per bag.
• F1 Green Capsicum — 12 × 12 inches; About 0.5–0.6 cm; Start in a seed tray or small nursery pot, then transplant one established seedling per bag.
• F1 Brinjal Big Round — 15 × 15 inches; About 0.5–0.6 cm; Start in a seed tray or small nursery pot, then transplant one established seedling into the larger bag.

How to grow: your first five steps

1. Choose your spot. Fruiting vegetables generally need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight. Leafy greens can suit a spot with around 3–5 hours of sun, with protection from harsh afternoon heat when needed. Check that your balcony or terrace can safely support filled bags.
2. Prepare the bags. Check that drainage openings are clear. Fill with a loose, well-draining vegetable potting mix, leaving a little space below the rim for watering. Do not use compacted soil alone.
3. Sow the seeds. Use the crop guide above. Cover gently and water with a soft spray so seeds stay in place. Keep nursery pots labelled.
4. Give seedlings room. Thin crowded leafy greens. Gradually introduce nursery-grown chilli, capsicum and brinjal seedlings to outdoor conditions before transplanting. Plant one fruiting vegetable per bag.
5. Care and harvest. Water as needed, feed established plants according to the plant-food label, and support taller plants. Pick leaves or vegetables when ready for the variety you are growing.

Easy care instructions

• Check moisture regularly. Keep the mix lightly moist during germination; avoid waterlogging.
• Water gently near the base of established plants. Water needs change with heat, wind, rainfall and plant size.
• Keep drainage openings unobstructed and avoid leaving bags standing in collected water.
• Use a suitable vegetable plant food as directed on its label. Do not overfeed young seedlings.
• Inspect the undersides of leaves for pests and remove damaged leaves when appropriate.
• Use stakes or supports if fruiting plants become top-heavy. Supports are purchased separately.
• Clean and dry empty bags before storage. Store unused seeds in a cool, dry place according to their packet instructions.

Choose a sowing time that suits your local climate. Spinach and methi usually prefer milder conditions; chilli, capsicum and brinjal need suitable warmth and light.
