Swiss Chard Microgreens — also known as Chard Microgreens — are the young, tender seedlings of Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris (Chard group), a member of the Amaranthaceae family native to Mediterranean and Europe. Harvested at the cotyledon or first-leaf stage, their flavour is mildly earthy and sweet with mild-moderate intensity, and their colour is green leaves, often with colourful stems. Ready to cut in just 10–14 days from sowing, Swiss Chard Microgreens are one of the easiest ways to grow fresh, homegrown greens indoors all year round, with no garden space required.

These seeds germinate in 4–7 days on cocopeat, coco coir, or soil-less growing mix spread about 1–1.5 inch deep in a shallow tray. Soaking: recommended (8–12 hours). Keep the tray covered in darkness for 3–4 days until the shoots are up, then move it to bright indirect light to partial direct light. Mist gently with the 1 Litre Garden Spray Pump on its fine-mist setting to keep the medium moist without disturbing the seeds, and harvest with Multipurpose Garden Scissors (Small) when shoots reach 1–3 inches. Beginner-friendly and low maintenance, Swiss Chard Microgreens grow happily at 20–28°C in any Indian climate zone.

Rich in vitamins and antioxidants typical of the parent vegetable, Swiss Chard Microgreens add a mildly earthy and sweet note to salads, garnish, sandwiches and smoothies. Once cut, they stay fresh for 3–5 days refrigerated — refrigerate in an airtight container or a paper towel-lined box. For a tray of contrasting colours and flavours, grow them alongside our Beetroot-DDR (Microgreen), or try the 6-in-1 Microgreens Seeds Combo Pack to sample six varieties at once.

Microgreens are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can grow at home. With a pack of Swiss Chard microgreen seeds, a shallow tray and a sunny window, you can harvest fresh greens within two weeks and sow a new tray every 7–10 days for a continuous supply — perfect for home cooks, fitness enthusiasts, kids' science projects, cafés and home-based microgreen businesses.

How to Grow Swiss Chard Microgreens at Home

What You Need

Sowing Swiss Chard Microgreens Seeds

Pre-moisten the growing medium and level it gently. Soaking: Recommended (8–12 hours). Scatter the seeds evenly across the surface so they are close but not piled on top of each other. Chard seed clusters sprout several stems; colourful stems develop best in bright light. Mist the surface well after sowing.

Germination and Blackout Period

Cover the tray with another tray or lid and keep it in a warm spot (20–28°C). Seeds germinate in 4–7 days. Keep them in darkness for 3–4 days — this encourages strong, upright stems. Check daily and mist if the surface looks dry; humidity should be moderate to high during germination.

Light and Watering

Once the shoots are up, remove the cover and place the tray in bright indirect light to partial direct light. A bright windowsill or balcony works well; leggy, pale shoots mean they need more light. Water with a fine mist or by bottom-watering (pour water into an outer tray so the medium soaks it up from below) to keep the leaves dry. Ensure good ventilation after blackout to prevent mould.

Harvesting Swiss Chard Microgreens

Snip with scissors just above the growing medium. Swiss Chard Microgreens are usually ready in 10–14 days. Cut just above the growing medium with clean scissors, ideally in the morning when the greens are crisp. Regrowth potential is low-moderate (varies by species; usually single-cut crop), so most growers resow a fresh tray rather than waiting for a second cut.

Storage and Freshness

Refrigerate in an airtight container or a paper towel-lined box. Harvested swiss chard microgreens stay fresh for 3–5 days refrigerated. Rinse just before eating rather than before storing. Store unused seeds in a cool, dry, airtight container away from direct sunlight.

Preventing Mould and Damping-Off

Avoid overwatering, ensure airflow, don't overcrowd seeds, remove any mouldy patches promptly. Common problems include overwatering leading to damping-off/mould, uneven germination, leggy growth from low light. Learn more about how microgreens are grown and used.

How long do Swiss Chard Microgreens seeds take to germinate?

Swiss Chard Microgreens seeds germinate in 4–7 days when kept moist at 20–28°C. Keeping the tray covered during the 3–4 days blackout period helps them sprout evenly.

How many days until Swiss Chard Microgreens are ready to harvest?

Swiss Chard Microgreens are ready to harvest in 10–14 days from sowing, once they reach 1–3 inches tall.

Do Swiss Chard Microgreens need sunlight to grow?

After germination, Swiss Chard Microgreens need bright indirect light to partial direct light. A bright windowsill or balcony works well; in low light they become pale and leggy.

Can I grow Swiss Chard Microgreens without soil?

Yes. Swiss Chard Microgreens grow well in cocopeat, coco coir, or soil-less growing mix. Soil-less media are clean, light and hold moisture evenly, which makes them ideal for indoor trays.

Should I soak Swiss Chard Microgreens seeds before sowing?

Recommended (8–12 hours). Chard seed clusters sprout several stems; colourful stems develop best in bright light.

What do Swiss Chard Microgreens taste like?

Swiss Chard Microgreens have a mildly earthy and sweet flavour with mild-moderate intensity. They work well in salads, garnish, sandwiches and smoothies.

What are the health benefits of Swiss Chard Microgreens?

Swiss Chard Microgreens are valued for vitamins and antioxidants typical of the parent vegetable. Microgreens are harvested young, so they pack a lot of flavour and nutrients into a small serving.

How do I harvest Swiss Chard Microgreens?

Snip with scissors just above the growing medium. Cut just above the growing medium with clean, sharp scissors and use or refrigerate them right away.

Do Swiss Chard Microgreens regrow after cutting?

Regrowth potential is low-moderate (varies by species; usually single-cut crop). For the best quality, compost the used medium and sow a fresh tray every 7–10 days for a continuous supply.

How long do harvested Swiss Chard Microgreens stay fresh?

Harvested Swiss Chard Microgreens stay fresh for 3–5 days refrigerated when you refrigerate in an airtight container or a paper towel-lined box. Rinse just before eating, not before storing.

Why are my Swiss Chard Microgreens getting mouldy?

Mould is usually caused by overwatering, poor airflow or seeds sown too thickly. Avoid overwatering, ensure airflow, don't overcrowd seeds, remove any mouldy patches promptly.

Why are my Swiss Chard Microgreens tall, thin and pale?

Leggy, pale growth means the tray is not getting enough light after the blackout period. Move it to bright indirect light to partial direct light and rotate the tray daily so the greens grow straight.

Why are my Swiss Chard Microgreens seeds not sprouting?

Check that the medium is evenly moist, the room is between 20–28°C and the tray is covered during the first 3–4 days. Old seed, dry spots and cold rooms are the most common causes of poor germination.

Why are my Swiss Chard Microgreens falling over at the base?

This is damping-off, a fungal problem triggered by soggy medium and still air. Water from below, allow the surface to dry slightly between mists and improve ventilation.

How often should I water Swiss Chard Microgreens?

Mist once or twice a day during germination and switch to bottom-watering once the leaves open. The medium should feel moist like a wrung-out sponge, never waterlogged.

Why is germination patchy in my Swiss Chard Microgreens tray?

Uneven sowing, dry patches or a medium that was not levelled cause patchy trays. Spread seeds evenly, pre-moisten the medium and press seeds gently for good contact.

Is the white fuzz on my Swiss Chard Microgreens roots mould?

Not always. Fine, white, even fuzz on the roots is usually healthy root hairs that disappear when misted. Mould looks like grey or web-like patches spreading over the seeds and leaves — remove those patches promptly.

Why are my Swiss Chard Microgreens turning yellow?

Yellow leaves usually mean the greens were kept in the dark too long or are not getting enough light. Once the shoots are up, give them bright light and they will green up within a day or two.

Can I grow Swiss Chard Microgreens on a balcony in Indian summers?

Yes, but avoid harsh afternoon sun and keep the tray between 20–28°C. In very hot months, grow indoors near a bright window and mist more often to prevent drying.

When is it too late to harvest Swiss Chard Microgreens?

Swiss Chard Microgreens are best between 10–14 days. Once true leaves develop, flavour and texture change and stems can turn fibrous, so harvest at 1–3 inches for the best taste.
