Water management is the single most important skill in summer terrace gardening. Overwatering kills more plants than drought. Under-watering in Indian summer heat causes rapid wilting and fruit drop. Getting it right is simpler than you think. Here's the Anandi Greens complete watering guide for April and summer terrace gardens.
Before watering any grow bag, insert your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it's damp — don't water. If it's dry — water thoroughly. This simple test prevents the most common gardening mistake: watering on a schedule instead of responding to actual soil moisture. In Indian summer, this can mean anything from once to twice daily for small bags.

Pour water slowly and deeply at the base of the plant — never overhead spray in summer heat. Water until you see some drainage from the bottom of the bag — this confirms moisture has reached all root levels. Quick surface watering is ineffective and encourages shallow roots.
After watering, if you're using liquid organic fertilizer, apply it immediately after plain water — nutrients are taken up most efficiently when soil is already moist.
For terrace gardens with more than 15–20 grow bags, or if you travel regularly, drip irrigation is absolutely worth installing. A basic gravity-fed drip system costs ₹1,500–3,000 and pays for itself in time savings within a month. IARI (Indian Agricultural Research Institute) research shows drip irrigation reduces water consumption by 30–50% compared to manual watering, while improving uniformity.
Drip irrigation also enables you to add soluble fertilizers directly to the water supply — a method called fertigation — which is extremely efficient for busy terrace gardeners.
Q: Can I use recycled water (greywater) for terrace garden grow bags?
A: Lightly soapy greywater from rinsing vegetables or fruits is fine occasionally. Avoid water with strong detergents, disinfectants, or bleach. Never use bathroom greywater on edible crops.
Q: My grow bags dry out too fast — what should I do?
A: Mulch immediately with 3cm of coco peat. Move smaller bags to partial shade in afternoon. Group bags together. Check if the bag has been overly aerated (very old fabric bags can develop excessive porosity — replace if needed).
Q: Should I water differently when plants are flowering or fruiting?
A: Yes — consistent moisture is even more critical at flowering and fruiting stage. Inconsistent watering (wet-dry-wet cycles) causes blossom drop in tomatoes and gourds. Never let the bag dry out completely once plants are flowering.
Q: Can I collect rainwater for my terrace garden?
A: Absolutely — and it's highly recommended. Rainwater is naturally soft, slightly acidic, and free of chlorine. Set up a simple rain barrel collection from your terrace water outlets. Your plants will respond noticeably well to rain vs. municipal water.
