Chillies are one of the most rewarding crops in Indian terrace gardens — but also one of the most susceptible to root-knot nematodes, Phytophthora blight, and aphid infestations. The right use of neem cake fertilizer addresses all three issues while simultaneously feeding your plants.
This sub-blog is part of our complete guide: Neem Cake Fertilizer: Uses, Benefits & Dosage Guide.
Chilli plants have a specific vulnerability: their roots are extremely sensitive to nematode attack. In container growing (grow bags, pots), nematode populations can build up quickly in the confined soil volume. Neem cake's azadirachtin disrupts nematode reproduction at the larval stage, reducing populations before they cause stunting or yield loss.
Additionally, chilli plants need a sustained, moderate nitrogen supply throughout their life cycle. The 5.5% N in neem cake fertilizer provides exactly that — slow, steady release that prevents the leaf burn associated with synthetic urea while maintaining the vegetative growth needed for heavy fruiting.
At Planting: Mix 50g of neem cake powder per 10L of potting mix. For a standard 12×12 inch circular geo fabric grow bag (approx. 12L capacity), use 60g.
Week 4 (Top-Dress): Apply 30–40g around the base of each plant. Avoid direct stem contact. Water in lightly.
Week 8 (Flowering Stage): Reduce neem cake to 25g per plant and combine with a phosphorus-rich input (bone meal or banana peel compost) to support flower set.
Week 12+ (Fruiting Stage): Monthly neem cake application of 25g maintains pest suppression through the fruiting period.
For the best chilli yields, use neem cake as the base of a 3-layer program: neem cake for nitrogen and pest control, vermicompost for full-spectrum nutrients and microbial life, and banana peel compost or DAP at flowering for phosphorus. According to research from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, this combination improved chilli yields by 38% over single-input organic programs.

Can I apply neem cake to chilli seedlings?
Not directly on root zone. Mix into the potting medium before transplanting. For seedlings under 3 weeks old, halve the standard dosage.
Will neem cake affect chilli taste?
No. Neem cake is a soil amendment, not a foliar spray. It does not affect the flavour, aroma, or heat level of the fruit.
How often should I apply neem cake to chilli plants?
Once every 4 weeks throughout the growing season. Increase the interval to 6 weeks during the peak summer months when plant metabolism slows.
Does neem cake help with chilli leaf curl?
Leaf curl in chillies is primarily caused by thrips or mites, not soil conditions. Neem cake does not directly address these foliar pests. Use neem oil spray for leaf-curl-causing insects.
