Best Exotic Vegetables to Grow by Indian Season

Exotic vegetables are far less forgiving about timing than everyday Indian staples - sow at the wrong time and you'll get a plant that bolts, stalls, or never fruits at all. This sub-blog is part of our Exotic Vegetable Seeds Growing Guide and breaks down what to sow in each season.

Winter (October to February)

This is peak season for cool-loving exotic vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts all need this consistently cool window to form proper heads - sowing too late into a warming spring usually causes them to bolt before harvest. Lettuce and other leafy exotics also do best sown in this window.

Summer (March to June)

Heat-loving exotics take over here. Zucchini and bell peppers both need warmth to fruit well and struggle in cold soil, so this is their prime sowing window in most of India, particularly in northern and central regions with a clear hot season.

Monsoon (July to September)

This window is trickier for most exotic vegetables - excess moisture and humidity increase disease pressure, especially for the cabbage family. If you're growing through monsoon, focus on containers with excellent drainage and hold off on the more disease-prone crops like broccoli until the season turns.

A Simple Seasonal Cheat Sheet

Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts: sow in autumn for a winter harvest

Zucchini, bell peppers: sow in early spring/summer for warm-season fruiting

Leafy exotics (lettuce, celery): sow in winter alongside the cabbage family

Once you know what to sow when, the next question is how - our guide on growing broccoli and cabbage-family vegetables covers the specific care these winter crops need, and containers and grow bags for exotic vegetables covers sizing for whatever you're planting.

FAQs

Q1. When should I sow broccoli seeds in India?

Autumn, roughly September to October in most regions, so the plant matures during the cool winter months it needs to form a proper head.

Q2. Can zucchini be grown in Indian winters?

It's not ideal - zucchini needs warmth to fruit well and struggles in cold soil, so spring to early summer sowing gives much better results.

Q3. Is monsoon a good time to grow exotic vegetables?

It's the trickiest season for most exotics due to excess moisture and disease pressure. If you do grow through monsoon, prioritise excellent drainage and avoid disease-prone crops like broccoli.

Q4. Do bell peppers need a specific season to grow in India?

They do best sown in early spring to summer when temperatures are consistently warm, as they're sensitive to cold and slow to establish in cool soil.
